The island of Cyprus is a Eurasian country in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of its most popular tourist destinations - a paradise for holidaymakers. Its always full of sun, the temperature reaches 35 degrees Celsius. Even in winter you can enjoy sunshine on some of the best beaches of the Mediterranean and even in ancient times, Cyprus was called "Island of the Sun." Since 1986, the European Union awards "Blue Flag" to eco-friendly beaches. To receive this award the beach must comply with some strict criteria, including environmental protection of coastal waters, water quality and safety. The Blue Flag beaches of Cyprus such as Ayia Napa, Makronissos, Nissi, Lanta, Protaras, Larnaca and Paphos are distinguished in pristine sand and clear sea.

The beaches in the resort areas of Cyprus are mainly sandy, in some places, pebble. There is more service provided on the beaches that belong to hotels even though sunbathing can be free. The guests of these resorts can enjoy water skiing, wind surfing and diving with full equipment.The hotels with their own beaches have special servants, who are constantly monitoring the cleanliness of the sand and take care of umbrellas and sun beds. The beach sand here is cleaned from seaweed and different debris brought by waves that is why the sea off the coast of Cyprus is well-groomed.
View Larger Map	Ayia Napa. There is a huge selection of golden beaches in this area. The most famous and popular ones are Nissi Beach, Sand Bay and Golden Sands. Protaras. Being a "Riviera" of the island, Protaras offers perhaps the best beaches in the Mediterranean. The famous Fig Tree Bay and the Flamingo Beach with their beautiful sugar-white sand are worth visiting. Larnaca. You can find sandy beaches in this area where the water is shallow and safe, such as Mackenzie, Finikudes and recently opened beach of the Cyprus Tourism Organization on the Dhekelia road. Governor's Beach. If you enjoy scuba diving, it's best! Located to the east of Limassol. Lady's Mile. The longest beach on the island, located to the west of Limassol and is very popular with local residents. Curium Beach. Located on the western coast of the island. Its a long sandy beach with a number of tavernas. Avdimou beach is located on the way to Paphos, its a quiet, beautiful pebble beach with a small tavern.
Pissouri is another quiet beach with ample opportunities for water sports. Coral Bay is a very popular beach located to the north of Paphos, with bea utiful clear waters. Lara Bay can only be reached by jeep. Its a secluded beach, home to the famous green back turtles. Latchi is approximately 40 minutes from Limassol with beautiful views and good fish tavernas.
