Rendezvous Bay, Antigua

For those who really want to get away from it all, there can be few better places to visit than Rendezvous beach on Antigua. This postcard-perfect Caribbean beach is not served by a road for cars, so to get to Rendezvous beach you’ll need some walking shoes. Expect to meet curious mountain goats on your walk and remember that a truly magical location waits.

For intrepid visitors, Rendezvous beach is to be found off the road between St. Johns and Falmouth. Turn right at Farrell Avenue and look for signs for the Spring Hill Riding Stables.
 
Park nearby and trek uphill for just over half an hour before the bay opens up before you from the cliffs, with one of the most attractive vistas you’re likely to find anywhere on Earth.
 
Alternatively there are tour companies offering guided hikes from Wellings Dam, or Rendezvous beach may be reached by boat.
Given its location, Rendezvous beach is not served by the facilities you’ll enjoy elsewhere on Antigua. When visiting it’s wise to be prepared with everything you need for an enjoyable day at the beach. Bear in mind that you’ll need to make the trek back too.
 
Once at Rendezvous beach, you’re in for a treat. Lush trees and picturesque cliffs frame the beach magnificently. The white Caribbean sands lead down to a shoreline of gently lapping white crests on crystal blue waters. All of the features you’d expect to find are here. It’s a slice of paradise far removed from commercial resorts and package holidays.
 
Far back in history, native Amerindians speaking the ancient Arawakan language once built a settlement near Rendezvous beach. For that reason the site is historically significant and a good number of artifacts have been unearthed at Rendezvous beach and placed on display at the Island’s museum.
For those with an interest in past events, Rendezvous beach features Ding-A-Dong-Nook, where the wife of Edward Warner was kept safe after being rescued in 1640 from Dominica Caribs. It’s easy to see why it would be an excellent place to hide.
 
On the circular headland at Rendezvous beach you can see the old guard house, a remnant of a bygone era. This building once featured a gun for coastal defense, and serves as a reminder of where you stand from a cultural perspective. Ruined sugar plantations are also in evidence, with Barter’s and Doeg’s estates having been major features of this landscape at one time. Some agricultural activity still takes place, as the visitor will be pleased to note.
 
Within the Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, Rendezvous beach is a true jewel in Antigua’s crown. Any visitor making the trip is rewarded with an unforgettable and precious experience. A perfect place for relaxing, sunbathing and swimming, Rendezvous beach fills all the requirements of a stunning beach setting. There’s history in evidence and cooling trade winds soothe the afternoon heat perfectly.
