Laughing Bird Caye, Belize

Laughing Brid Caye National Park is one of the most beautiful of all the Belize islands. This small island provides a unique mixture of coral reef and exotic vegetation; Laughing Bird Caye beach is stunning. This exotic location is within easy reach of the Plecencia Peninsula and provides visitors with an experience that few will be able to forget. Tourism is only really starting to take off in this part of the world, but it is certain to become a much loved destination for more people in the future.

Laughing Bird Caye National Park is about twelve miles off the coast of Belize. This area is part of the Belize Barrier Reef; the second biggest barrier reef on the planet. Laughing Bird Caye is the most southern of all the islands on the reef. The name Laughing Bird Caye is in honor of a local bird called Larus artricilla (the Laughing Gull); unfortunately tourism has forced these birds to move to a quieter area.

The island is actually part of a protected area since 1981 and is included as part of the reef as a World Heritage site. This should mean that tourism will never impact the local environment too much.

This is a storybook tropical island full of coconut trees, white sands, and lush costal mangroves that contain many exotic creatures; Laughing Bird Caye beach is picture perfect. The island is actually quite small at only 200 meters in length and 20 meters across. Nobody really lives on this island full-time and the nearest human habitation is back at Plecencia Peninsula. This means that the island offers a great chance to enjoy nature that has not been influenced by human contact too much.

There are many trips to the island organized from the Plecencia Peninsula and other nearby areas. Most people will come for the day and spend some time exploring or enjoying the stunning Laughing Bird Caye beach. There is of course some great opportunities for snorkeling and diving tours are also popular in the area. This is also a favorite location for people who want to get in a bit of fishing; this can be arranged with one of the many local tour operators. Those people who are interested in plant life will be delighted at what is available considering it is such a small island. There are also plenty of birds that can only be seen in this part of the world such as; the Melodious Blackbird, Brown Pelican, and Green Heron.

A visit to Laughing Bird Caye is an ideal day trip for those people visiting the Plecencia Peninsula. Here they will find something really unique and breathtaking. Those who enjoy taking photos will find plenty to draw their attention, but will have problems convincing people at home that it really was that beautiful. Most tours to the island arrive in small boats but there are also larger boats that make the journey too. Most trips involve spending about six hours on the island which is probably long enough to really get a feel for the place and spend some relaxing time on Laughing Bird Caye beach.
