The island is actually part of a protected area since 1981 and is included as part of the reef as a World Heritage site. This should mean that tourism will never impact the local environment too much.
This is a storybook tropical island full of coconut trees, white sands, and lush costal mangroves that contain many exotic creatures; Laughing Bird Caye beach is picture perfect. The island is actually quite small at only 200 meters in length and 20 meters across. Nobody really lives on this island full-time and the nearest human habitation is back at Plecencia Peninsula. This means that the island offers a great chance to enjoy nature that has not been influenced by human contact too much.
There are many trips to the island organized from the Plecencia Peninsula and other nearby areas. Most people will come for the day and spend some time exploring or enjoying the stunning Laughing Bird Caye beach. There is of course some great opportunities for snorkeling and diving tours are also popular in the area. This is also a favorite location for people who want to get in a bit of fishing; this can be arranged with one of the many local tour operators.
