The coastal strip has numerous hotels, bars and restaurants. If you want complete peace and quiet, you can visit a picturesque U-shaped bay of Morne Rouge, where the beaches are very good, and the number of people there is significantly less.
Bathways beach is near the town of Sutures. Its a 3 mile long beach of coral sand, protected from the strong currents of the Atlantic by a rocky ledge. There are three islands near the beach: Sugar Loaf, privately-owned with one house on its southern shore; Green Island, which has several vacant buildings, but no beach, and Sandy Island, which is an abandoned hotel with a good beach for swimming on the leeward side.
Levera Beach is a few kilometers to the east of Sutures. Its a wild strip of sand surrounded by the the fallen rocks from the marine cliffs. It lies directly opposite of Sugar Loaf island. This area is included in the system of national parks and Grenada is one of the few breeding sites in the Caribbean sea for turtles.
Carriacou - a small rural island, 27 kilometers north-east of Grenada, has great beaches and shores. The natural harbor attracts many yachtsmen by the magnificent view of the neighboring islands of Grenada and the Grenadines. |
