Cayo Guillermo beach, Cuba

Escape to a breathtaking island paradise at Cayo Guillermo, located on the tiny, uninhabited island of Cayo Guillermo just off the north coast of Cuba – a favorite hangout of the legendary American novelist Ernest Hemingway, who highlighted this tropical destination in his novel Islands in the Stream. Cayo Guillermo boasts five miles of beautiful beaches. You can sit back and relax, soaking in the sun on the brilliant white island sands, or get active and take a dip in the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Cayo Guillermo beach, Cuba

Cayo Guillermo provides a gorgeous, remote island getaway. Surrounded by vibrant coral reefs, the waters around the island attract countless species of tropical fish and other marine wildlife. No wonder this place is Cuba’s leading destination for snorkeling, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing. At low tide, the clear green water is so shallow that beachgoers can wade several hundred feet into the ocean. Cayo Guillermo is also home to a rich and diverse wildlife population, including pelicans and flamingos.

Playa Pilar, Cayo Guillermo, Cuba

The island of Cayo Guillermo is home to four all-inclusive resorts – Gran Caribe Villa Cojimar, Iberostar Daiquiri, Melia Cayo Guillermo and the Sol Cayo Guillermo – so tourists have a variety of lodging options. Because the island is a protected area sealed off to all Cuban nationals (except for those who work on the island) the bulk of Cayo Guillermo’s entertainment and dining options are located within the resorts. The resorts also contain medical facilities.
There’s plenty to see and do on the island. Two other beaches, Playa Larga and Playa Los Flamencos, are close to Cayo Guillermo beach, and provide a more isolated respite farther away from the main resort area, which attracts more crowds. Travelers may also take a day trip or hotel-sponsored tour to the mainland city of Morón, a gateway city to the cays.
Many visitors take a bus or taxi to Playa Pilar, on the south coast of Cayo Guillermo Island. Playa Pilar is known for its pristine sand and waters, as well as its unusually large sand dunes – some towering over 50 feet tall. Playa Pilar is widely considered a must-see attraction on the Island, which also boasts an extensive network of mangrove swamps teeming with wildlife.

Despite its remote location and tiny size of just seven square miles, Cayo Guillermo Beach is easily accessible from Jardines del Rey Airport, only 12 miles away on neighboring Coco Cayo Island. Travelers may also fly into Ciego de Ávila International Airport. Both airports are connected to the island via causeway, and many visitors catch glimpses of dolphins, pelicans and other tropical wildlife as they drive to and from Cayo Guillermo.

The beach is a perfect destination for a romantic getaway or an adventure-filled family vacation. With plenty of opportunities to relax and explore, Cayo Guillermo is a tiny tropical paradise with endless possibilities. Strict limits on commerce, pollution and human access help to preserve the natural beauty. Experience the difference an uninhabited island can make in your next beach vacation.
